Chris Heaphy was born in Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1965. Of Maori and European extraction, he attended the University of Canterbury’s Ilam School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1991 with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting. In 1998 he graduated from the RMIT University in Melbourne with a Master of Fine Art in Painting. He has exhibited in solo shows throughout New Zealand since 1993 as well as in Australia and Hong Kong and in 2007 his work was included in the Frieze Art Fair, London. In 1993 and 1994 he received Creative New Zealand grants and in 1994 he was awarded the Olivia Spencer Bower Fellowship. In 1999 he undertook a residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris as well as the Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin Residency in Champagne in 2001. Chris Heaphy lives and works in Auckland.
