Born in The Netherlands in 1861, Scheltema studied first with the Gouda painter J.J. Bertelman (1821-1899), and then at other places including the Royal Academies in The Hague and Antwerp and worked as a portrait painter prior to his arrival in Australia in 1888. He is best known for his landscapes with foreground livestock, a genre echoing Paulus Potter and he mostly painted in Victoria. He is recorded to have collaborated by contract with Charles Rolando from 1889 to 1893, painting cattle and sheep into Rolando's landscapes. Later Scheltema ran his own painting classes, which included the older painter Robert Camm. The prolific Scheltema travelled back to Europe twice: in 1898-1899 and in 1909-1911, when he also painted some time in Tunisia, Italy, Switzerland and Scotland. He died in Brisbane in 1941.
