The wife of noted portrait painter, William Beckwith McInnes, Violet McInnes was born in 1892. She studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne. She worked first as a photo-graphic artist, and after a break to care for her six children, resumed painting in the early 1930s. Her first solo exhibition - of flower paintings, landscapes and large scale figures - was in 1937. She continued to exhibit her work until about 1968.

The earliest auction listing we have for Violet McInnes is in 1972 and in total 210 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 158 (75%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $7,260 for Untitled sold by Elder Fine Art in October 2006.
