Born in Hamilton, Tasmania in 1893, Holmes studied at the Hobart Technical College and at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney from 1930 to 1931. She was a member of the Art Society of Tasmania with whom she exhibited between 1927 and 1972, and the Tasmanian Group of Painters with whom she also exhibited until 1969. She held seven solo and group exhibitions in Melbourne between 1938 and 1951. She died in Hobart in 1973.
