Born in India in 1847, Kennett Watkins studied extensively in England and Europe before arriving in New Zealand in 1873 and initially worked as a photographer. He married and began exhibiting his paintings in 1877 in Auckland where he also worked as a teacher. Watkins painted landscapes in oil and watercolour.
