Born in South Australia in 1944, Hannaford worked for three years as a cartoonist with the 'Adelaide Advertiser' and then studied at the Ballarat School.of Mines. A realist artist, he lived in Melbourne from 1969 to 1973 where he won the A. M. E. Bale Art Scholarship in 1968. He has exhibited since 1989 is Sydney and Adelaide and was a finalist for the 2002 and 2015 Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize. He has travelled and worked in India, Europe and Africa.
