Born in New South Wales in 1894, John Flanagan studied under Dattilo Rubbo at the Royal Art Society of New South Wales, and also received help and criticism from Norman Lindsay. In 1916 he travelled to the USA where he became famous for his scraper-board illustrations for magazines such as 'Cosmopolitan' and 'Colliers'.
