About Tom Sanders
Born in Victoria in 1925, ceramic artist, muralist and tapestry designer, Tom Sanders studied at the East Sydney Technical College. He set up a pottery in Eltham in the early 1950s but left for Europe in 1957 and after travelling and studying, returned to Australia in 1964. He began work on creating large ceramic wall murals for city buildings, shopping centres and airports, and for his large silk tapestries woven in Japan. Of the six wall murals he created in public buildings, only three remain, the others having been demolished.
We have records of art auction sales by Tom Sanders from 1982 and in total 25 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 16 (64%) were sold. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2009. Works by Tom Sanders are held by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
