Born in England in 1891, Christopher Perkins studied at the Slade School in London. After serving in World War I he lived in St Tropez, and then in 1929 arrived in New Zealand to become instructor at the Wellington Technical College Art School. He was an advocate for developing a typically New Zealand style of painting, and felt that New Zealand's special quality of light was an obvious basis. Perkins remained in New Zealand for only a few years, but his work is represented in galleries throughout the country.
