Born in Fitzroy, Victoria in 1889, Max Martin moved to London as a young man. He designed sets for musical comedies and pioneered animated cartoon techniques while working as a black and white artist. He contributed paintings to the exhibitions of Australian art in London in 1924 and 1925, then moved to Ireland in 1928. After Martin's return to Australia in 1948, he only exhibited his work occasionally.
