Born in Victoria in 1877, Ambrose Patterson studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne Art School and in Paris. He returned to Australia in 1910 but left for the USA in 1917. In 1919 he was appointed Professor of Painting at the University of Washington State in Seattle. Except for a brief visit to Australia in the 1950s he lived in the USA until his death in 1967.
The earliest auction listing we have for Ambrose Patterson is in 1971 and in total 74 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 45 (61%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $33,019 for Les Roses Trémières (Hollyhocks) sold by Christies in December 2007. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Ambrose Patterson are held by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and a further four major public national galleries (see list below).
