Born in London, Eugene Scott arrived in Melbourne in the 1850s to work as a photographer, cartoonist and illustrator. In 1866 he moved to Sydney as chief cartoonist for Sydney Punch and in the 1870s his large wood engravings and Lithographs of rugged outdoor scenes regularly enlivened The Illustrated Sydney News He also worked for The Bulletin, the Brisbane Boomerang and the Queensland Worker. His major painting, , is now in the Mitchell Library, Sydney.
