Born in Dunedin, New Zealand c1880, Stuart Reid studied art in London before serving as an official war artist in World War II. During this time Reid was commissioned to paint a number of works for the British Imperial War Museum. He returned to New Zealand in 1922, then moved to Sydney shortly after and became well known for portraits of racehorses, including Phar Lap, which hangs in the National Museum. He was a finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize each year from 1936 to 1939. His works hang in the Australian Jockey Club, at Randwick Racecourse and in the Melbourne Museum.
We have records of art auction sales by Stuart Reid from 1979 and in total 33 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 17 (52%) were sold. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2024.
