Leonard John Beck was born in Sydney on the 24th February 1890, the son of John Leonard Beck and Matilda Beck (nee Saunders, daughter of Charles Saunders who owned of the Pyrmont sandstone quarries). Matilda Beck was an artist who operated an art school from her home in Sydney, so it must be assumed Leonard’s first artistic endeavours were guided by his mother. He later enrolled at the Julian Ashton Art School and became proficient in watercolour, oils, pen and ink and, during the years of the Great Depression, he specialised in etchings as a source of income. His favourite subjects were significant buildings in the Sydney area and country scenes, especially around Killcare and the Brisbane Waters where the family owned a holiday house. He won many awards for his art and is represented in the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Leonard Beck exhibited with the NSW Society of Artists in 1919 and his work was included in Australia Etching and Engravings 1880s-1930s an important exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW in 2007. Leonard Beck passed away in Sydney on the 3rd March, 1975 aged 85 years.

The earliest auction listing we have for Leonard Beck is in 1979 and in total 36 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 29 (81%) were sold. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Leonard Beck are held by the National Gallery of Australia and Art Gallery of NSW.
