Born in Victoria in 1897, Colahan studied medicine before switching to painting. He studied at the Max Meldrum School and in London and Paris. He returned to Australia in 1927, but departed again for London in 1939. In 1942 he was appointed an official war artist with the Australian forces in England. He exhibited at the Paris Salon, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Society of British Artists. In 1964 his interest turned to sculpture and he moved to Italy and continued sculpting there.
