Born in England about 1853, Robert Bugg arrived in Melbourne in 1857. He studied in Melbourne, becoming a portrait, marine and landscape painter using oil and watercolour. He exhibited with the Victorian Academy of Arts from 1878 and later with the Victorian Artists' Society. In 1892 Bugg moved to Bendigo where he opened a photographic studio.
