A topographical artist, creating sketches and oil paintings, James Stone is known to have been active in South Australia from 1864 to 1906 and to have exhibited with the Victorian Societry of Fine Arts in 1857. Many of his sketches are of Adelaide and environs. His work is represented in the La Trobe Library, Melbourne.
