A New Zealand born artist, James Boswell was born in 1906. He studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland in 1925, then moved to London where he studied at the Royal College of Art in London until 1929. In 1927 Boswell exhibited with the London Group. He began commercial work in 1932, and that year he joined the Communist Party, and produced illustrations and cartoons for left wing British newspapers such as the 'Daily Worker' and 'Left Review'. Boswell was a founding member of 'Artists International' a left wing organisation later to become known as 'Artists against Fascism'. He served in World War II and sketched army and battle scenes. He became a full time artist from 1952.
