Born in New Zealand in 1893, Miller trained as an architect, but his career was interrupted by World War I, when he served with the New Zealand forces and was taken prisoner by the Turks. He first studied art at the Slade School, London in 1929 before coming to Australia. His works, distinctive in style, owe something to the abstract and cubist movements of the time, as well as to his architectural training. Miller spent his last fourteen years as a teacher of drawing at the East Sydney Technical College. His works are represented in all major collections and in the Tate Gallery.
