Born Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, in 1864 he moved to Scotland in 1866 when his family returned. He studied at the Edinburgh Trustees Art Academy, and then enrolled at the Antwerp Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts at the age of 19 where he studied from 1883 to 1885. He was a member of the Glasgow School and the International Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers. After his family's return, he spent all of his life in Scotland apart from visits to Sri lanka and Australia and about 18 months spent in Japan.
