Born in Western Australia in 1916, Grey-Smith studied extensively in England. During World War II he was shot down over Germany and started sketching while a prisoner of war. While convalescing in hospital in England after the war he began painting and carving. He studied for two years in England and returned to Australia in 1947. He has since held many exhibitions of his works and has won several major awards.
