Born in Auckland in 1928, Mary McIntyre she lived on a farm for many years. She finally realising a long held ambition when she enrolled in night art classes in 1966 in Matamata in the Wakato region of the North Island, and later attended Elam School of Fine Arts and was taught by Colin McCahon. A realist figurative painter a retrospective of her work was held at the Waikato Museum in 2015.
The total number of works by Mary McIntyre offered for sale by auction since 1989 is 155, of which 111 (72%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $18,849 for Death and the Maiden sold by International Art Centre in May 2016. This year 11 works have been offered for sale. Works by Mary McIntyre are held by the Museum Of New Zealand and Auckland Art Gallery.
