Born in Sydney in 1939, landscape painter John Downton studied at the Royal Art Society of NSW and worked and painted with Leonard Long. He has exhibited in Sydney, Melbourne and provincial centres since 1974, and has studied and worked in the USA, China and the Phillipines. Johne Downton is a member of the Australian Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Art Society of NSW. He was awarded the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to visual arts as a landscape and maritime artist and for services to the community in 2017.
