Born in England in 1812, William Fox was educated at Oxford University and called to the bar. He arrived in New Zealand in 1842 and edited the "Wellington Spectator". Fox made some exploratory trips around New Zealand, recording his travels in sketches and watercolours. He entered political life in 1855 and served until 1881.
