Born in Newcastle, Lillian Sutherland studied at Newcastle Technical College under John Passmore. A landscape figural and portrait artist, she has exhibited in New South Wales and in Melbourne. She was an Art Gallery of New South Wales Wynne Prize finalist in 1965, 1972 and 1980; the Sir John Sulman Prize in 1960 and the Archibald Prize in 1968, 1971, 1977 and 1980.
