Born in Sydney in 1898, Portia Bennett studied under Datillo Rubbo and at the Julian Ashton School, and also trained as a teacher. She taught from 1921 to 1925 when she and her husband moved to Queensland; and then on to Perth in 1932. Bennett exhibited regularly in Perth, and was noted for her architectural studies of the local streets and landmarks. In 1952 Bennett won the Hotchin Watercolour Prize.
