Born in New South Wales in 1866, Albert J. Hanson studied at the Royal Art Society in Sydney in mid 1880s, and became known as a painter of seascapes. He became a member of the Royal Art Society in 1889 and exhibited that year, and in the same year moved to Dunedin, New Zealand where he conducted an art school. He later returned to Sydney, and then lived in London for four years from 1892. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. He returned to Sydney in 1896, where he lived until his death in 1914.

The total number of works by Albert Hanson offered for sale by auction since 1971 is 91, of which 66 (73%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $68,723 for In the Golden Gleam of a Summer Sun sold by Menzies in March 2012. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
