Gilbert John Noel (John) Darbyshire was born in Victoria in 1911. He studied privately under Septimus Power and was a traditional painter in oil and acrylics. In the 1970s he published five books containing paintings of old gold mining towns in the eastern states of Australia. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held in Melbourne in 1989.
