Born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1964, Shane Cotton studied at the Canterbury School of Fine Arts before teaching in the Maori Studies Department at Massey University. Of dual Maori and European descent, his works borrow from both cultures. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held almost annually since 1990 throughout New Zealand and in Sydney and Melbourne. His work has been included in international exhibitions including Turbulence, The 3rd Auckland Triennial in 2007, Paradise Now? Contemporary Art from the Pacific at the Asia Society Museum in New York in 2004 and he was New Zealand’s representative at the Prague Biennial in 2005. A major retrospective exhibition of his work was held at City Gallery Wellington and Auckland Art Gallery in 2003.
