Larry Mitchell was born in Northampton, Western Australia in 1953. In the 1970s to the 1990s h taught at both secondary and tertiary level in West Australia, before becoming a full time artist in 1997. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries he travelled almost annually to Europe, Britain, and the Pacific Islands. He was the winner of Geraldton Art Award in 1975 and in 1981 the Melville Purchase Award and the Canning Art Award. In 2000 he was a finalist in both the Wynne Prize, Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Fleurieu Prize, Art Gallery of South Australia. As well as numerous exhibitions in his home state he has also shown in London, San Francisco and Nevada.
