Born in England in 1906, Ivor Francis arrived in Australia in 1924 and studied at the South Australian School of Arts. A surrealistic and semi-abstract painter in oil, pen and ink, he also worked as an art critic for various newspapers in Adelaide and Sydney. Francis taught at various institutions in Adelaide, becoming a lecturer in art history and art appreciation at the University of Adelaide from 1970.
