Born at The Hague in Holland in 1931, Carl Van Nieuwmans studied in The Hague and in Sydney after his arrival in 1950. In 1959 he moved to Alice Springs, and in 1960 he became founding vice president of Central Australian Art Society. He later purchased Rex Battarbee's house and gallery to use as his home, studio and gallery. Carl Van Nieuwmans moved to Adelaide in 1981. He has held several exhibitions and won awards for his work. He was the only artist to have an exhibition at the Sydney Opera House.
