Born in Adelaide in 1881, Arnold Jarvis left school at 17, working in show business as an equilibrist (an acrobat who performs balancing feats), juggler and a fast painter and sketcher of landscapes. Utilising these latter skills, he established a reputation for creating traditional watercolour landscapes in the style of Hans Heysen. He is believed to have been resident in the Melbourne area where he died in 1960.
