Born in Victoria in 1896, Thompson studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne, and at the Westminster School in London. From 1943 to 1953 he taught art at Scotch College in Melbourne, later moving to South Australia, where he became a prominent member of the Contemporary Art Society and the Society of Artists.
