Samuel Birch was a distinguished landscape painter in oils and watercolours who lived in Cornwall and joined the artists' colony led by Stanhope Forbes. He lived at Lamorna, the name of which he incorporated into his own. He visited Australia and New Zealand in 1937 and on his return an exhibition of his paintings was held in London.
We have records of art auction sales by Samuel Birch from 1973 and in total 76 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 46 (61%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $87,750 for Cornish Coast sold by Sotheby's in August 1996. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Samuel Birch are held by the Auckland Art Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery and a further four major public national galleries (see list below).
