Born in Sydney in 1968, Tobias Richards studied art at East Sydney Technical College, graduating in 1987. He was later awarded a Bachelor of Visual Arts at the San Francisco Art Institute in California. He has lived in the Northern Territory since 1997, teaching in remote Indigenous communities, lecturing at Charles Darwin University and working at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory while creating and exhibiting. He has exhibited his paintings in solo shows in Sydney and Brisbane since 1988 as well as overseas in Malaysia. Residences awarded include Kuala Lumpur 2007, Hill End NSW 2008, Central TAFE Perth WA 2009 and Cité Internationale des Arts Paris in 2010.
