Born in Adelaide in 1953, Stewart MacFarlane enrolled at the South Australian School of Art in 1969 and graduated with a Diploma of Fine Arts (Painting) in 1974. In 1975 he travelled to New York where he studied and worked for eight years. In New York, he was awared a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) from the School of Visual Arts in 1977. in Adelaide, Melbourne and the USA. He is a painter and printmaker and has exhibited widely since 1979.He returned to Australia in 1983, and took post-graduate studies at the Victorian College of the Arts graduating in 1984. After a year as artist-in-residence in the Besozzo Studio, Italy he returned to Australia and was awarded a residency with the Roswell Artist-in-residence program, New Mexico, USA, for a year. Over the next eight years, Stuart MacFarlane worked and exhibited between Melbourne, Sydney, and Roswell. In 1994, he received a residency at The Bemis Centre, Omaha, Nebraska in the USA.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $9,760 for Boardroom sold by Mossgreen Auctions in November 2010. This year one work has been offered for sale.
