Born in Victoria in 1890, Herbert Rose studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne, and later in Paris. He travelled widely, spending some time in Europe, America, Africa and the Middle East, where he died after contracting smallpox. He is bBest known as a landscape artist and etcher.

The total number of works by Herbert Rose offered for sale by auction since 1971 is 149, of which 127 (85%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $10,200 for Le Ruy, France sold by Leonard Joel in March 2012.
