Born in 1936, Barbara McManus is the daughter of artist Nancy Isobel (Nan) Bretel. She became a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors in 1981. A painter in pastels and oils and an art teacher, McManus was awarded the AME Bale Travelling Scholarship in 1986.D uring this time her work was included in the International Pastel Exhibition in Lille, France. She spent many years on the teaching staff of the Victorian Artists’ Society and was made a fellow of that Society in 1990. She was the winner of the inaugural A.G.R.A. 'Aspects of Excellence Medallion' in 2000 and has been a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. She has tutored groups overseas in China and and Greece.
