The cartoonist David Laity, was born in Benalla, Victoria in 1958. After leaving school he worked as a motor mechanic and after moving to Perth in 1983 decided to turn his hobby of drawing cartoons into an occupation. His Rat Race comic strip was published in the Perth Western Mail in 1983-84 and then in the Shepparton News from 1984-87. In 1986 he studied drawing at Shepparton TAFE then moved to Melbourne. He had solo shows of his work at the Benalla and Shepparton Art Galleries in the mid 1980s. He exhibited commercially in Melbourne almost annually from 1995 to 2007, and then in 2015.
