Born in 1872, Jo Sweatman studied at the National Gallery School from 1890 to 1898. She was a member of the Australian Artists' Association and exhibited with the Victorian Artists Society between 1901 and 1917. Jo Sweatman was also a founding member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters group. A landscape painter who was know as one of Australia's formost painters of wattle, she lived in the semi-rural outer Melbourne suburb of Warrandyte and was a member of the artistic group that existed in Warrandyte.

The total number of works by Jo Sweatman offered for sale by auction since 1969 is 201, of which 139 (69%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $33,600 for The Secret Garden sold by Lawson~Menzies (now trading as Menzies) in December 2007. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Jo Sweatman are held by the National Gallery of Victoria.
