Born in New South Wales in 1935, Janet Dawson was awarded a National Gallery of Victoria travelling scholarship in 1956. She studied at the Slade School in London and travelled extensively in Europe. A pioneer of abstract painting in Australia in the 1960's, she participated in the Contemporary Australian Painting Exhibition which toured America. In 1973 Dawson became the third woman to win the Archibald Prize for a painting of her husband Michael Boddy.

The earliest auction listing we have for Janet Dawson is in 1977 and in total 95 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 73 (77%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $26,840 for Jubilee Oval 1973 sold by Sotheby's in May 2016. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023.
