Born in California in 1888, Stan Cross arrived in Perth as a child. In 1904 he joined the West Australian Railways and enrolled in an art course at Perth Technical School. In 1912 he travelled to England, spending a year at St Martins School. On his return worked he as a freelance artist for the 'Western Mail' and 'Sunday Times'. In 1919 he joined 'Smith's Weekly' where he originated several comic-strips the best known being 'Wally and the Major' and 'The Potts'.
