Born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1890, after schooling, he attended the Elam School of Art. Johnson served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces in World War I, before arriving in Australia with his wife in 1921. He became well known for his Australian impressionist-style landscapes and Sydney Harbour scenes and was a regular exhibitor with the Royal Art Society of New South Wales.In 1936 he was commissioned to paint a picture of Canberra for presentation to the National Gallery in Wellington, New Zealand.
