Born in New York in 1853, Jane Sutherland arrived in Sydney as a child in 1864, moving to Melbourne in 1870. She studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne and became known as an Australian landscape painter, who was part of the pioneering plein-air movement in Australia, and a member of the Heidelberg School. She exhibited at the Victorian Academy of Arts from 1878, then with the Australian Artists’ Association, and with the Victorian Artists’ Society from 1888 until 1911. With Amy Vale, she was elected to the committee of the Victorian Artists Society in 1900, the first two women to be on the VAS Committee.. Her career was curtailed in the early 1900s when she suffered a stroke, but following the death of her carer-brother in 1911 she was foreced to retire.
