Born in Scotland in 1840, Charles Douglas emigrated to New Zealand to work on a sheep run. He later became a gold miner, cattle farmer, explorer and surveyor. An oil painter and sketcher in watercolours and in wash, his work is represented in the Turnbull Library in Wellington and in the Hocken Library in Dunedin.
