Born in redfern, Sydney in 1904, left school at age 13 and began work with a signwriter. Passmore studied in Sydney under Julian Ashton and George Lambert, then visited Britain and Europe where he worked and studied. When he returned to Sydney in 1951 his work showed the influences of Cezanne and Rembrandt. John Passmore began teaching at the Julian Ashton School, then the Newcastle Technical College followed by the National Art School, East Sydney Technical College. In 1959 he won the first Helena Rubinstein Travelling Scholarship and went back to Europe, but his health collapsed in the early 1960s and he took little or no part in further exhibitions.
