Born in Johannesburg. Roger James studied under George Bell and at the Swinburne College Art School, and Slade School London, under Randolph Schwabe. He practised as a commercial artist in London, and returned to Australia in 1938. He commenced teaching drawing at Swinburne College in 1945.
