Born in London in 1799, Frederick Liardet was an army officer, inn-keeper, musician, writer and naive painter. He migrated with his family to Melbourne in 1839 where they prospered in the Victorian goldrush. Liardet wrote and illustrated accounts of the times and these and his watercolours are held in the La Trobe and State libraries of Victoria. He died in New Zealand in 1878.
