Born in Austria in 1855, Carl Kahler arrived in Australia in 1885. He studied at the Munich Academy and was best known as a portrait painter. He painted three major paintings of Melbourne Cup meetings each with figures in the crowd being fully identifiable. However his most famous work is My Wife's Lovers, a massive painting (1.77 x 2.58 metres) depicting forty-two of American millionaire Kate Birdsall Johnson's Turkish Angora cats. Kahler travelled to San Francisco in 1906, and is believed to have died aged 49 in the major earthquake that year.
